Hippopotamuses, or hippos, are large, mostly herbivorous mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa.

Despite their seemingly docile appearance, they are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa due to their aggressive behavior and powerful jaws. Hippos spend much of their time in water, which helps them stay cool in the heat, and they are excellent swimmers. They emerge from the water at night to graze on grasses. Adult hippos can weigh between 3,000 to 4,000 pounds, making them one of the heaviest land animals, second only to elephants.
